WHY I LOVE THESE HEIRLOOMS

WHY I LOVE THESE HEIRLOOMS

CAPE GOOSEBERRIES (Physalis peruviana), also called goldenberry is a species of ground cherry in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) with its edible fruit. The plant is native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru and was widely grown in South Africa beginning in the 19th century. It is unrelated to true gooseberries of the genus Ribes (family Grossulariaceae). Cape gooseberries are bittersweet, slightly tart, and quite juicy.  They get their name from the paper thin cape that covers and protects the fruit inside until it ripens. The casing is green at first, fading to a light brown as the fruit ripens. If kept inside its casing, a Cape Gooseberry can keep for up to 45 days.

TASTING NOTE: Sweet-tart & pineapply

CHARENTAIS Cantaloupe originated in  Southeastern France, specifically the fields around the town of Cavaillon. The exact date of origin of the melons is unknown, but it is thought that melon seeds were brought from Avignon to Cavaillon sometime during the 14th century.  Charentais melons are a small varietal, averaging 7 to 10 centimeters in diameter and 1 to 1.5kg in weight, and have a round to oval shape. The melon’s rind is thin, smooth, and hard and the flesh is highly aromatic, emitting honeyed, fruity, and floral notes reminiscent of ambrosia. The melons should feel heavy for their size, and French folklore states that the best melons bear ten stripes each. Charentais melon’s flesh contains a high sugar content mixed with mild acidity, creating a very sweet flavor followed by a pleasant, soft floral aftertaste.

TASTING NOTE: Fruity & Fragrant

GOLDEN HONEY Watermelon is a stunning, superbly sweet, watermelon that packs an intense sweet punch.  Its a rare heirloom variety producing excellent round fruits with sweet juicy golden yellow flesh.  It has green striped skin and can grow to 25-30 cm in diameter and weigh up to 10-15 kg. Yellow watermelons were actually cultivated before red melons. They were first grown in Africa about 5000 years ago and then went through cross-breeding to produce red watermelon.  Yellow watermelons are generally slightly sweeter than red watermelon and have a honey-like flavour. Nutritionally yellow watermelon is a great snack with only 46 calories per cup. It is high in vitamins A and C, making it good for your immune system and skin health. Yellow watermelon contains more of the antioxidant beta-carotene than red watermelon.

TASTING NOTE: Sweet & Sugary
