WHY I LOVE THESE HEIRLOOMS
WHY I LOVE THESE HEIRLOOMS
HABANERO chillies gets its name from Spanish word which means “of Havana,” as Cuba is probably where the Spanish first encountered the variety. Plant genetic studies indicate that it may have originated in lowland Peru and, through trade, spread from there. An archaeological excavation in the Valley of Mexico uncovered the remnants of a habanero grown thousands of years ago. A staple of Mayan cuisine, today it is commercially grown on farms on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The first thing you'll notice when you bite into a habanero chilli is the heat. But the spiciness is slightly tempered by a sweet, fruity flavor. Habaneros also have a subtle smoky taste, too.

PERI-PERI Birds Eye Chilli is originally from Africa but has gained fame all around the world for its fruity flavour and heat. Its this same chilli that one of our very own South African brands have built an international following from...Nando's sauces would not the same without this African Heirloom. Both Portuguese settlers and local East Africans started integrating the chili into their food, mixing it with other components to create the sauce. In the second half of the 21st century, these African nations fought for independence from Portuguese rule. As a result, the white settlers fled back to Portugal and neighboring countries like South Africa. They brought the sauce with them, creating an international condiment consumed across continents to this day.

JALAPENO is Spanish for "Jalapa" (or Xalapa), the capital of Veracruz, Mexico, where they were originally grown, hence the name. While originating in Mexico, it is now grown worldwide for it's popular flavor and mild heat level, which averages around 5,000 Scoville Heat Units. That is hot, but not too hot. You'll find them served when green, but if you leave the jalapeno pepper on the plant long enough, it will turn red. The red variety are just as delicious as the green jalapeno pepper, though a touch sweeter. It is a bullet shaped fruit of medium length 5-9cm by 2.5cm and grows to a height of 75-90cm and bears continuously during summer. If cared for properly these plants can live and bear up to 5 years.
